Last week the argument was about expertise. This week it moves one step out. What happens to everything downstream of the code, once writing the code stops being the expensive part? GitLab's essay names the economics. Nolan Lawson describes the crater already forming in frontend. And several smaller releases read like early attempts at the plumbing that world will need: intent-scoped permissions, worktrees an agent can live in, diff viewers built for reading what an agent wrote.

When code is abundant The clearest explanation I've read of what is changing. Stop measuring cost per line, start measuring cost per accepted change. A useful change needs generation, environment setup, context, verification, review, remediation, governance. AI collapses the first of those and leaves the rest alone, which makes all of them proportionally bigger. Make generation ten times faster without touching CI and review and you have not become ten times faster. You have moved the queue.

🌍 What cheap code costs

The asteroid currently hitting frontend web development The most honest piece I've read on this, mostly because it refuses to predict the ending. The part worth arguing about in your own team: picking a framework because agents know it well is a real selection criterion now, and a year ago it was on nobody's decision matrix. Where I disagree is the disposability argument. Frontend code is disposable right up until it isn't, and then the cost of nobody understanding it gets measured in months.

Speed Charlie Deets found a 1996 video of someone buying a 35mm camera online. It takes ten minutes. Buying the same camera on a phone in 2026 took under thirty seconds. The observation is about the patience visible in the old footage, which has since vanished from the world. Right now we are the person in that video, waiting on agents. When that waiting collapses, building will start to feel impulsive, and I think that's the right call.

Microservices and GenAI in 2026: my Dear Architects conversation Chris Richardson recaps the Dear Architects podcast, including the dark energy and dark matter metaphor for service boundaries. Five forces push subdomains apart, five pull them together, and the architect's job is balancing them. The part that stuck with me sits elsewhere: coding agents do well on well-documented greenfield work and struggle on legacy modernisation, which is where most of the actual money is.

🔌 Plumbing for agents

Introducing agent intent-based access control Vendor material, so read it at arm's length. The problem underneath is genuine though. Static permissions worked when a human with limited patience for clicking sat behind each request. An agent has no such limit and will cheerfully find the path nobody anticipated. Comparing declared intent against actual behaviour, then quarantining sessions that drift, looks like table stakes to me rather than a premium feature.

lukeed/lane tool Copy-on-write git worktrees with memory that survives them. git worktree add gives you a clean checkout and takes away every warm cache you had: node_modules, target/, virtualenvs, local .env files. Lane clones those by reference instead, using clonefile(2) on APFS and FICLONE on btrfs and XFS, so the new worktree starts warm. It also attaches durable notes to a file or symbol and flags them when that code changes. It never calls a model, which in 2026 counts as a feature.

modem-dev/hunk tool A terminal diff viewer built for one job: reading what an agent wrote before you accept it. Multi-file review stream, sidebar navigation, inline agent annotations, split and stacked layouts, watch mode, and support for Git, Jujutsu and Sapling. It installs as a Git pager. If the GitLab piece is right that review is the next bottleneck, this is what the response looks like.

🛠️ Staying sharp

AI Coding Tip 031: don't write prompts for a model that evolved I catch myself pasting the same "double-check, be precise, don't guess" preamble into every task, long after the model started doing all of that unprompted. Prompts written a year ago for a different model are the same kind of debt as code written for a framework that has since changed its defaults three times. The one piece worth keeping is an explicit autonomy policy, because it's the only part the model won't work out on its own.

Visual design rules you can safely follow every time Something like eslint rules for visual taste. It won't replace a designer. It does remove the small defects that make an interface feel wrong when nobody can point at why. I keep it open during any PR that touches UI.

🎨 Frontend & tooling

shadcn-ui/cn tool A new engine for Tailwind class merging that replaces both tailwind-merge and clsx. Same APIs, full parity, zero dependencies, and a claimed 30x speedup. It's framework-agnostic and doesn't need shadcn/ui, so it drops into any Tailwind project.

Cypress 16: faster tests, starting with HTTP/2 support HTTP/2 on by default, the cy.type() keystroke delay dropped from 10ms to 0, and the old CSS-ancestor-walking visibility algorithm replaced by a native check plus adaptive point sampling. Both behaviour changes revert via keystrokeDelay and visibilityStrategy: 'legacy', which you'll want if your suite quietly depended on the old timing.
