A curated digest of what I found worth reading this week.

We no longer ask "does AI write good code." We've moved past that question. It's become common knowledge that coding is solved (and yes, it can still produce slop and bad code too). So what actually matters now is: how do you know the code is good, when there's far too much of it for any human to read? A survey doing the rounds this week put a number on the gap — most engineers say they don't trust AI output, and barely half check it before committing. That's the uncomfortable middle we're all living in.

QA stops being something you practice at the end of the pipe and becomes something you build into the loop — tests, compilers, CI, and constraints that push back before bad work reaches you. Your attention is a limited resource now; spend it on the nuanced calls, not on rubber-stamping diffs.

There's a lighter frontend section this week too. I finally got around to reading Lea Verou's take on dark mode toggles. It's a simple but powerful reframe: the tri-state toggle is your data model leaking into the UI, and two states are enough for the user. I also liked Anthony Hobday's collection of low-risk design defaults, which is exactly the reference I wish I'd had as a developer who never enjoyed styling.

✨ Featured

Agentic Code Quality Addy Osmani names the shift plainly: for most of history we judged code by having someone read it, and that simply doesn't scale when agents generate more than anyone can review. So the check has to move out of the human's head and into the harness — the compilers, tests, security policies and CI that surround the agent.

The line I keep coming back to is that software quality isn't a single metric, it's a collection of signals — correctness, yes, but also maintainability, performance, security, comprehensibility — each with its own back-pressure. Ideally that pressure lives throughout the loop, not as one review at the very end. Human attention becomes something you spend deliberately, pulled in only when the automated guardrails break. It's the most coherent description I've seen of what "reviewing code" is turning into.

🤖 AI

Practical Loop Engineering The companion piece to the featured one, also from Addy. A loop is just an agent repeating cycles of work until a stop condition is met, and the skill is picking the simplest loop that fits the task rather than reaching for the complex one. His running example is a repo with 80k+ stars taking dozens of PRs a day; instead of grinding through them by hand every morning, a scheduled loop checks for new issues and hands him a triaged summary.

Read it next to the Claude Code team's own framing of loop types that he references. The takeaway isn't "automate everything" — it's that a lot of the work you do manually is actually a loop you haven't named yet.

Engineering Teams Are Struggling to Verify AI-Generated Code at Scale This is the piece with the number I mentioned up top. SonarSource's 2026 survey of 1,100+ developers: 72% use AI tools daily, AI writes 42% of committed code, 96% say they don't fully trust its accuracy — and only 48% consistently verify before committing. That 48-point gap between distrust and validation is the whole problem in one statistic.

The explanation is sharp. AI is exceptional at the things that pass a glance — clean syntax, tidy indentation, familiar patterns, well-formed docstrings — so the code looks professional even when it's functionally wrong. Under deadline pressure, "looks right" quietly becomes "is right," and people press commit on code they've admitted they don't trust.

RAG, AI Agents, and Agentic AI: Most Developers Are Confusing All Three A clean bit of vocabulary hygiene. RAG retrieves knowledge and generates an answer but doesn't act. An AI agent adds tools and memory so it can reason and take action across steps. Agentic AI coordinates several specialised agents through an orchestrator to handle a whole workflow.

The framing I liked: these aren't competing approaches, they're layers, and most real systems use all three together. Which leads to the only advice that matters — pick the simplest architecture that solves your problem. Not every task needs a swarm of agents, and pretending it does is how projects drown.

🛠️ Tools

Introducing the MDN MCP server MDN now ships an MCP server, which means your agent can pull real documentation and browser-compatibility data straight from the source instead of reconstructing it from training data that may be a year stale. It works with the usual clients — VS Code, Zed, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Claude Desktop.

For Claude Code it's a one-liner: claude mcp add --transport http mdn https://mcp.mdn.mozilla.net/. Given how often "can I use this API yet" is the actual question behind a frontend bug, having authoritative compat data in the loop is a genuinely useful upgrade.

TanStack Hotkeys The TanStack folks turned their attention to keyboard shortcuts, with the tagline "let users own the muscle memory." It's early (v0), built in public, and framework-flexible in the way the rest of the TanStack lineup is.

Hotkeys are one of those features everyone reimplements badly — scope collisions, inputs stealing keystrokes, no discoverability. Worth a look if only to steal the mental model, even before you'd trust a v0 in production.

🎨 Frontend

Dark mode toggles: two states are enough Lea Verou makes an argument that reads as obvious the moment you hear it: the classic light / dark / auto tri-state toggle is your data model leaking into the UI. Yes, three states should exist in the implementation — but at any given moment one of them is irrelevant to the user, and exposing all three forces people to reason about a problem they don't currently have.

Her reframe is that a dark mode toggle is a temporary comfort adjustment, not a permanent preference. You're reading in bed, the page is a flashbang, you flip it. Two states — "fine" and "fix it" — match what the user actually wants. It's a lovely little lesson in designing for goals instead of internals.

Visual design rules you can safely follow every time Anthony Hobday's collection of low-risk design defaults, and it's exactly the reference I wish I'd had as a developer who never enjoyed styling. Use near-black and near-white instead of pure black and white. Prefer optical alignment over mathematical alignment when a shape's visual centre doesn't match its geometric one.

None of these are laws — he's explicit that you break them when you have a reason. But if you're shipping UI without a designer, following them by default will keep you out of trouble far more often than winging it.

It Doesn't Matter if You Use AI, As Long As It's Good A useful counterweight to the whole "did you use AI?" moral panic. The tool you reached for is not the interesting question — the quality of what you produced, and whether you can stand behind it, is. It pairs neatly with the expertise argument above: the judgment to know when the output is good is the part that's still entirely yours.
