The next layer is where decisions matter. Rules (in .claude/rules/) load automatically based on context. A writing-tone.md rule loads when you're drafting. A client-communication.md rule loads when you're writing emails. Commands (in .claude/commands/) require you to trigger them manually when you need specific workflows. Skills load automatically when Claude recognizes they're relevant. Agents run in the background handling longer tasks. The key insight is understanding when each makes sense. Add rules when you notice yourself repeating the same instructions. Add commands when you have workflows you trigger regularly. Add skills when you have automatable tasks that Claude can recognize and handle without prompting.
What's particularly powerful about this structure is that it compounds. Your Claude Code system learns your patterns and becomes more effective over time. The person who invested time in a quality CLAUDE.md, a few well-designed rules, and a couple of useful commands has an AI partner that's orders of magnitude more effective than someone who just opens their project folder and starts chatting.
