It does not change the underlying value proposition, which was that students paid for answers Chegg had and ChatGPT did not. Once that asymmetry flipped, every press release about AI urgency was narration over a business model already on fire.

CheggMate was the wrapper. A GPT-4 powered tutor bolted onto the existing product, shipped fast to show motion. This is the pattern I watch most companies repeat right now. An internal AI committee meets, decides the answer is "we need our own AI thing," and ships a chat interface against the existing data. The problem is that the existing data was the moat, and a wrapper around a commoditised model does not restore a moat that the same model just dissolved.

What Khan Academy, Duolingo, and Quizlet did in the same window was answer a different question. Not "how do we put AI in our product" but "what do we sell when the answer is free." Khan leaned into pedagogy and the Socratic method that a raw LLM will not do by default. Duolingo doubled down on the streak loop and gamification, then used AI to personalise it. Quizlet picked study mechanics. Each one had a wedge that was not "we have the answers."

For a senior developer, the parallel is uncomfortable. If your job is to write the code that the LLM can now also write, "I am aware of this and I use Copilot" is the Chegg answer. Acknowledgment without a wedge. The wedge has to be something the model is structurally bad at, or something the model needs you to operate.
