Stripe built payments. Then Stripe built billing. Then Stripe built fraud detection, tax, identity verification, and a dozen things that used to be someone else's job. The pattern is visible in retrospect: every time a new layer appears in commerce, Stripe finds a way to sit in the middle of it. The Agentic Commerce Suite is that move again, and it's worth paying attention to.
When AI agents start executing purchases autonomously, someone needs to handle the trust, authorization, and payment flow between an LLM and a merchant. Stripe is saying that someone is them. Not "we added AI to our checkout." The pitch is orchestration: Stripe as the connective tissue between your ecommerce platform and whatever agent interface your customer is using.
The word "re-intermediation" gets used a lot in commerce circles, usually with a vaguely anxious tone. Here it means something precise. The direct relationship between merchant and payment processor is getting a new layer inserted above it. Stripe is not threatening to replace merchants. It's threading itself into the conversation between AI agents and the checkout experience, which is a different kind of power.
Whether this works depends on whether agentic commerce actually becomes how people shop. That's a big if, and Forrester has some useful cold water on that question. But as infrastructure bets go, this one is well-timed.

There's a pattern in how technology platforms win. First you build the product. Then you build the protocol. Own the protocol and you don't need to own every product built on top of it. OpenAI pulling back from native checkout (they tried, it didn't stick) and pivoting to ACP is textbook: losing the battle for the transaction, winning the war for the standard.
ACP positioning as an "open standard" is the right move for adoption, and it's also a strategic hedge. If you define the protocol that AI agents use to interact with commerce platforms, your model stays in the loop even when other people's infrastructure is doing the actual work. The Linux Foundation taking stewardship of MCP the same week suggests these aren't isolated decisions. The governance layer of agentic commerce is being formalized in a hurry.
Two weeks, three major protocol decisions: Stripe claims the payment orchestration layer, OpenAI claims the commerce protocol layer, MCP gets institutional governance. For anyone building in this space, the infrastructure choices you make now will be constrained by these decisions for years. That's not alarmist. That's just how platform lock-in works.
I keep thinking about the teams that built deeply custom payment integrations in 2012, right before Stripe made all of that work irrelevant. The same thing is happening at the protocol layer right now, and the window to influence it is closing.

Social commerce looked inevitable for years. Every major platform built native shopping. TikTok Shop, Instagram Checkout, Pinterest buyable pins. The infrastructure was there. The adoption was not, at least not in Western markets. 62% of US online adults don't trust social platforms with their financial data. That number didn't shift because the checkout experience got smoother.
Pfeiffer's four lessons from social commerce are worth sitting with: consumers need tangible value to change deeply ingrained habits, poor early experiences kill adoption permanently (and permanently means permanently), channels need to match actual customer behavior rather than predicted future behavior, and trust has to come before transaction. None of these are new insights. All of them are being ignored in the current agentic commerce hype cycle.
The protocol stack for agentic commerce is genuinely production-ready. Stripe's infrastructure is real. ACP is real. MCP governance is real. What isn't ready is a consumer who trusts an AI agent to buy things on their behalf. That gap is not a technology problem. It's a behavioral and trust problem, and those take longer to solve than another protocol update.
There's something useful about this reality check coming from Forrester specifically. Enterprise customers listen to Forrester. If the analyst community starts consistently framing agentic commerce adoption as a trust-first problem, that changes the conversation in the rooms where budgets get allocated. Which is a good thing, because right now those rooms are mostly having the wrong conversation.

TLDR: A B2B engineer reframes AI reliability: measuring errors is the wrong metric. Measuring the percentage of user needs actually fulfilled is the right one. By that measure, AI with a 5% hallucination rate can outperform a traditional system with a 0% error rate and a 40% dead-end rate.
This section stopped me. It's one of those reframes that seems obvious after you hear it but changes how you evaluate AI systems from that point forward.
A B2B client's traditional search engine had a 0% hallucination rate. It also returned zero results whenever a user typed the wrong synonym for a product category. Engineers loved it. Users were lost. The system was technically correct and practically useless in 40% of cases. By the metrics the engineering team was tracking, it was perfect. By the metric that actually matters, it was failing nearly half its users.
Michael Kurowski's reframe: reliability should be measured against user needs fulfilled, not system errors avoided. An AI with a 5% hallucination rate is more reliable than a deterministic system with 0% errors and a 40% dead-end rate. This is not a defense of hallucinations. It's a calibration of what the bar actually is.
The engineering instinct is to hold AI to a zero-defects standard because that's the standard we apply to compilers and database queries. But we never held commerce search, recommendation engines, or product filtering to a zero-defects standard. We held them to conversion rate and task completion. Applying a stricter standard to AI than to the systems AI is replacing is a category error, and it's one I see happen in almost every team that's moving cautiously on AI adoption.
This doesn't mean shipping unreliable AI. It means the benchmark is "does this help more users accomplish what they came to do" rather than "did it ever produce output that was technically wrong." Those are different questions and they lead to different engineering decisions.

The more interesting question, as Pawel Wiacek frames it in this issue's opener, isn't where to migrate — it's whether your commerce stack is ready for a world where AI agents are becoming a primary shopping interface. The Alokai vs. SAP Composable Storefront video is useful precisely because it answers that question visually rather than in a feature matrix.
The demo shows smart product highlighting and contextual tooltips that adapt to user intent. No chat window. No prompt. The intelligence is embedded into the browsing experience. This is a concrete implementation of the trust gap Forrester is pointing at: if consumers don't trust AI agents to shop for them, the alternative isn't to remove AI — it's to make the AI invisible in a way that feels helpful rather than intrusive. The chat window is the social commerce playbook. Ambient intelligence is a different bet.
Ostafil's framing introduces a useful shorthand: UX + AX = modern CX. Agent Experience — how well your storefront serves AI agents operating on behalf of users — isn't a separate layer you add later. It's a design constraint that should be shaping your architecture now. The teams shipping both will compound; the ones shipping only one will retrofit.
